This is the crux of the work—the audience must bring themselves to the threshold and confront the infinite space to complete the work.” — Chul Hyun Ahn Korean artist Chul Hyun Ahn investigates infinite space through his use of light, color, and illusion. His interest in the gap between the conscious and subconscious compels him to construct illusionistic environments, providing a spaces for contemplation. Ahn’s sculpture urges the viewer to consider man’s boundless ability for physical and spiritual travel while exploiting notions of infinity and the poetics of emptiness. Ahn has translated geometric painting and the Zen practice of meditation into an art of light, space, and technology, enticing the viewer to look deeply into his frame of environments. His works create an optical and bodily illusion of infinity through apparent limitless space. His work has been exhibited throughout the US, including recent exhibitions at the Katzen Art Center at American University (Washington, D.C.) and Stevens Square Center for the Arts (Minneapolis, MN). Fernandez’s paintings are social, psychological, and personal investigations. Since moving to Baltimore, his work has evolved in response to living and working in a new, unfamiliar city, taking on abstraction in the wake of unrest, representation of societal memory, and figuration through the loss of identity. Each of these investigations are grounded in Fernandez’s experience moving from Mexico to the United States and his efforts at balancing different cultures and languages, while handling the contested spaces of ethnography and assimilation. With a direct emphasis on process as the first act of expression, Fernandez does not amplify his politics to the sound of alarms but rather, places empathy on a narrative that has been overshadowed by the ongoing friction between these two neighboring countries. Subsequently, the tenor in his works are poetic yet non-complacent as they underscore issues of immigration, drug violence and economic hardship. Ishii’s recent works feature the artist’s signature use of synthetic resin Kuroicoat C-720, a neon green substance sprayed at Fukushima Daiichi after the reactor meltdown in an effort to resist the airborne spread of radiation in 2011. This use of material references disaster sites, where invisible radioactive material weaves itself into the contaminated landscape, changing one’s relationship to the body. HEEJO KIM Heejo Kim’s dreamy figurative paintings feel like fragments of a memory, each lived through curvy, vibrantly molten bodies huddled together in moments of domesticity and candor. Light illuminates, confronts, and sometimes hides portions of narrative, an expression which reveals much about the artist’s experience as a young woman in Seoul and her desire to find comfort and identity in space. “Tenderness, to quote Roland Barthes, is an ‘infinite and an insatiable metonymy’ for love. The figures’ gentle gestures in my paintings are a metonym for their ineffable silent desire to be loved by others. The figures move their hands and bodies delicately as if everything around them were fragile and could break easily if touched… they keep a careful distance from each other. This distance expresses waiting for affection from others rather than trying to seize it right away. This is how they protect their hearts, but it is also a way of giving love as an active practice.
