Henry Coe is an American landscape painter born in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1946. He received a BA in English, with a minor in art, from Roanoke College, and an MFA in painting from the Maryland Institute College of Art. Working primarily in oils, Coe paints both large- and small-scale landscapes, often working en plein air. His paintings are grounded in close observation of light, atmosphere, and place, with particular attention to low horizons, expansive skies, lengthening shadows, and the presence of air moving through space. Coe has worked primarily in the Mid-Atlantic region, coastal Maine, Texas, and western France. His work has been shown in galleries in Baltimore, Chicago, and Houston, and is included in selected collections including the Kanagawa Museum of Modern Art, Japan.
