RENÉ TREVIÑO

Waxing & Waning

NOVEMBER 11, 2021 - JANUARY 14, 2022

OPENING RECEPTION: THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 11TH, 6 - 8 PM

C. Grimaldis Gallery is pleased to announce the solo exhibition of René Treviño, Waxing & Waning.

Ten paintings in Waxing & Waning, show phases of the moon, while several others depict walls painted from images taken during the artist’s travel through Mexico and the Yucatán peninsula. In the series, Treviño paints man-made walls once highly decorated in a state of ruin. Through the juxtaposition of his peculiar observations, René Treviño’s Waxing and Waning considers the cyclical nature of time, revealing his inclination for truth through the uncovering of history.

The carefully rendered paintings draw similarities between the rough surface of the man-made walls and the craters of the moon. While Treviño’s paintings of the moon consider a surface mostly untouched by humans, paintings such as Baltimore Cemetery Wall assert boldness for its stone and mortar. Both gestures suggest the passing of time and offer a different way to view our human experience. Waxing & Waning asks us to consider what past civilizations might have seen as they looked up toward the sky and serves as a metaphor for the ephemerality of our lives.

René Treviño received his BFA in Fine Arts from the School of Visual Arts (SVA) in 2003 and his MFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in 2005. Treviño has shown at the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford, CT; the Baltimore Museum of Art, Goliath Visual Space in Brooklyn, NY; White Box in New York; the Delaware Center for Contemporary Art; the Arlington Arts Center in Arlington, VA; the Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History and Culture in Baltimore, MD; and Pentimenti Gallery in Philadelphia, PA.
