Joan Waltemath: In the Absence of Grief

February 19 - March 21, 2015

The paintings and drawings in Joan Waltemath’s solo exhibition “In the Absence of Grief” have been selected from the artist’s “Torso/Roots” body of work that is informed by the mathematical Fibonaci sequence found in nature. Using hand-ground pigments and graphite, Waltemath creates precise compositions of geometric forms and vibrant colors that reflect the construct of contemporary urban life from principles of science and mathematics. These works take years to complete; from the meticulously planned paintings slowly emerge spatial illusions that change in relation to the viewer’s perspective and give rise to a heighted awareness of time, movement, and change.
